A union does not have to remain a permanent supporter of somebody else’s party. It may create its own political movement so members can run, be elected and exercise public power within election law.

The aim is not politics for its own sake. It is the ability to change the rules that shape members’ work, services and lives.
The Constitution should allow the union to establish a political movement and support active political participation by individual members and Locals.
That authority creates capacity, but it does not automatically activate the movement in every election.
Each Convention evaluates the real political situation and decides whether the movement should take part in particular elections. It may also allow or prohibit cooperation with other political forces.
The choice becomes part of the program and roadmap for the term.
The union provides plain-language civic education, courses and practical training so members understand public institutions, campaigning and candidacy. Union leave and funding may support workers under approved rules.
Education matters because a right to run for office is not usable when only insiders know how the process works.
The Executive considers support within the budget Convention created for that purpose. Funding is distributed proportionally under published criteria appropriate to the level of election.
The rules must prevent personal favourites from receiving shared resources without a fair basis.
The movement remains accountable to union members and cannot become a separate machine controlled by officers or staff. Spending, endorsements, cooperation agreements and results are reported through the secure portal.
If the strategy fails or departs from the mandate, the Mid-Term Accountability Conference can withdraw confidence from the Executive carrying it out.
