Start with what members receive

“Sell us the pen” means: do not begin by explaining why a party needs union support. Explain what specific value its proposal gives union members.

A photograph, friendly history or general promise of access is not a member benefit.

Make the offer measurable

A serious proposal names the action, expected result, deadline, way to verify it and consequence if it is not delivered.

The union should be able to report later whether the promised benefit actually appeared.

No money for belonging

Political support is not a fee paid for a place near powerful people. Member dues cannot be transferred simply because supporting a familiar party has become a habit.

The party or candidate must offer a real agreement based on mutual interest.

Who may accept the deal

Convention sets the political course and may allow or forbid collaboration. The Executive may negotiate details only inside that mandate.

A deal affecting shared assets or major member interests returns to the decision-making level required by the Constitution.

Put it in writing

The agreement records both sides’ obligations, timing, public or member reporting, cost, exit and what happens after failure.

A handshake between leaders cannot bind thousands of members or hide the price of support.
